![]() ![]() In the United States' case, too, we spent a truly embarrassing amount of time pinning negative connotations to brown people, especially in our movies. The hate largely comes from how they believe their rights are being taken away from them just because other groups are gaining rights, as if there can only be a finite amount that everyone has to share. They believe that there's a global culture war against Christianity, the most popular religion in the world, and Christians are under constant threat of persecution. The "commercial" part also comes from how the US has plenty of megachurches that pool in around $ 6.5 million on average per year. I think it'd be easier to just refer to these types as "Commercial Christians" since they usually don't know all that much about the bible aside from what conservative media personalities like to quote as a way to justify their prejudices. The whole point being that it's someone's character, not a label, that defines who they are. But then a Samaritan, someone who would (as in the previous chapter) typically not be expected to be merciful towards Jews, chooses to extend every amount of care and hospitality for this complete stranger. Then in the next chapter is where we get the famous parable of the Good Samaritan, the whole point of which is that Jewish religious authority figures passed this dying victim of robbers, saw him, and passed him by. So two of his disciples ask “Lord, do you want us to call down fire from heaven to consume them?” The next verse is simply "Jesus turned and rebuked them," followed by "and they journeyed to another village." But because it was a Samaritan village, and Jesus's destination was Jerusalem, the Samaritans wouldn't welcome him. In the Bible, there's part of a chapter where Jesus sent messengers ahead to prepare for his arrival in a village on his way to Jerusalem. Spoilers for somethingĬatholic as well, and yeah, the amount of people who don't understand their own beliefs and twist them into something else is absurd.
